Most of you have probably heard of or even read Jim Collins’ book Good to Great. It had a profound impact on me several years ago when it came out. Not having a business background, I found it very important to learn from others in the areas where I have little or no training. I have always had a natural gift for leadership and learned a lot from excellent leadership material in the marketplace. Good to Great is a study done by Collins and a number of graduate students that empirically are the "best practices" of companies that have not only been good for a season but have had long sustainable growth.
As I read Collins’s book, it got me thinking about a number of areas. I began to ponder the "best practices" of Christians who have demonstrated long sustainable growth in integrity, godliness and impact. It wasn't something that I set out to do as a project, or a book I intended to write someday; but more or less some private thoughts I’ve had for the last few years.
One night I couldn't sleep and so I got up to turn on the fireplace, grabbed a rocking chair in the living room and stared into the fire wondering, “What exactly are the best practices of great Christians?” A number of thoughts came to my mind and I jotted them on the back of an envelope. I have since gone back and revised that list several times. From there I decided to look at passages of scripture and put a message or two together on some of these best practices. Well sooner or later I had done a message on all 10 practices and even had the opportunity to teach them where it was recorded on video for future ministry use.
When some business executives asked me to speak to their coworkers and peers, I thought this might be an interesting topic for them. Little did I know that it would light a fire in their hearts. Maybe it's because they were familiar with Jim Collins’ book, or maybe it's because they're the kind of people who love a challenge; but the simple messages resonated with these men and women and motivated me to begin to package the material in such a way that it might help many people from all kinds of backgrounds. In fact, right now I'm finishing the manuscript to turn these 10 messages into a book that will be published by Baker Books in the fall of 2007. For those of you who read my blogs and find yourself led to break out in to prayer—this would be a good time to pray for me as I only have 10 to 15 days to finish these things up to get them to the editor.
